If you use a lot of email like I do then there’s a good chance you’re running out of storage space.
I was asked by a friend about this and when I looked into it I found a method to get more storage.
We both recovered 6 Gig of data storage!
To check how much storage area you have left, go to the ‘Send’ label and scroll down to the bottom.
It should show you how much data you’ve used and how much you have available.
I’ll show you how to get more storage space, but first I want you to protect any messages you have that you want to keep.
You’re going to create a special Label (directory) to hold your important emails in.
DO NOT simply move them into the directory named “Important” because (under gmail) all that does is mark them with a flag and they can easily be deleted from your inbox. You need to create a Label that does not exist and it needs to be directly below your ‘Inbox’ label.
Here’s how to do it using gmail. If you are using a different provider it should be similar.
Look at the top left and make sure the Menu is showing. If it isn’t click on the 3 bars at the top left to make it show. Then look down and click on More
Then click on categories
Then click on + Create New Label
Type in a name that is special to you and DO NOT use the label “Important” as mentioned above.
After you’ve created a special Label MOVE all your important emails into that directory.
Now REBOOT!
Trust me, I’m a retired engineer and I had to work with the Windows OS as well as write programs. Whenever you make important changes you have to reboot, otherwise the Operating system can get messed up.
Ok, after rebooting you should see the new label so click on it and make sure all the stuff you want to keep is in there. We’re going to do some massive deletion of emails and reclaim the storage space it’s using.
- Go to Inbox
Delete all the junk you don’t want.
OH! Look at that email message you forgot (or missed) and didn’t move it into your new label!
If you see one move it in there now.
Continuing…
- Go to Spam
This time click on the little dot at the top left to ‘Select all’.
Delete it.
- Go to Trash
Click on the little dot at the top left to ‘Select all’.
Delete it.
Now wait… See, there’;s more. That’s because it only deletes x number at a time.
So keep clicking on the box at the top left to ‘Select all’ and keep deleting the files until they are all gone.
- REBOOT!!
You will notice that it takes an extra second to bring the operating system up (if you are savy to these things).
That’s because the OS is resetting pointers and cleaning up everything.
As soon as you get the system back up go into your email.
Now go to the ‘Send’ label and scroll down to the bottom.
You will see how much storage space you have reclaimed.
Hope this helps a lot of you.
