Everyone who uses a computer is subject to neck, wrist and arm pain.
I’m going to show those of you who don’t have it how to keep from getting it, and those of you who already have it how to improve your ergonomics to help make your pain go away.
The picture above shows the man using proper techniques so that his body is not being damaged as he uses a computer, but there’s a lot more to this. You can not ‘lower your desk’ as it says in the picture! All desks have a standard height of 30" off the floor to the surface that the computer sits on.
Neck Pain Relief
What you need to do is adjust your chair so that your arms are straight and flat against the desk. Then you put something under the monitor to raise it up to eye level so that you don’t tilt your head to look down. I put 3 thick books underneath the monitor so that when I sat at the desk and looked straight ahead the monitor was at eye level. This kept me from subconsciously tilting me head to look at the screen.I eventually bought a monitor stand.
Using a laptop presents a serious problem. You can buy a wooden bridge or have one made from a lumber shop. All you need to determine is what height to have it made. Your monitor MUST be raised so that you are not spending hours with your neck tilt.
That’s an important start, but you can do more if you want to.
I went to a chiropractor’s office and bought one of those pillows that allows the head to tilt back while laying in bed on my back. If you can’t find a pillow like that and suffer from neck pain then you can take a thick towel, double it lengthwise and roll it up. Place it under the base of your neck while laying on the bed.
This will give you instant pain relief! Lay there for 20 minutes and you will be pain free until you tilt your head back down. Once you adjust your monitors’ height so that is at eye level you won’t have the neck pain. You can even sleep all night with the pillow supporting your neck for best results. You can thank me later.
Wrist and Carpal tunnel Relief
I need to talk about this more than what is said in the articles you will find on the Internet.
Do this simple experiment while reading this:
"Put your right hand at eye level in front of your face. Keep your wrist straight and wiggle your fingers up and down. Now tilt your wrist back and wiggle those fingers again, It’s uncomfortable to do that because the tendons in your wrist are being stretched around the bend.
That’s what you do everytime you type on a keyboard when your wrists aren’t straight! This causes carpal tunnel and a lot of wrist pain. It will also cause pain in the elbow because your movement is stretching the tendon connected to your elbow. They call this tendonitis. People who have this condition already can get some relief by keeping their wrists straight and wearing a wrist band. The wristband not only helps with keeping your wrist straight, but it also keeps the tendon from moving as much and hence, reduces the pull at your elbow. If you can, buy a thick pad to raise your wrists up so that they are straight when you type.
If you have shoulder pain it’s likely because you are not supporting your arm while using the mouse.
Yeah, you need to put your arm on something because it acts as a ‘lever’ to your shoulder. If you use the mouse a lot and move your arm you will have shoulder pain.
I hope this helps a lot of you who suffer from neck, wrist and arm pain.
It’s not much fun playing if you are hurting.
Cheers
