I sometime had 40 or more power-ups but I am told to buy some - why can’t I used the ones I have?

depends on how much you are betting, if it’s 5mil then you can use any type, if its 1k then you can only use singles, 5k singles/families, and so forth.
@Oliver_a_Marley When you are choosing the island game you want to play, look under the entry fee amount and it lists which power ups can be used in that particular game. For instance Bungalowah Island the only power up used in the game is the Single Daub. So if the power ups you have are not the Single Daub, it will put up a message to buy power ups. As the islands progress, more power ups come into play for that island. Hope this helps.
Also, in case you did not know, every 24 hour period you can get free power ups by clicking the Daily Rewards at the top of the screen when you go into Fringo. So worth doing even if you are not playing the game at that time. Then you can build up more power ups.
